Brief Review of Biryani House (Yonge & Wellesley) & Havelly (Dixie & Dundas)

Biryani House - I finally went with a few friends this past Sunday. We got an appetizer platter, a chicken biryani, lamb shank dish, 2 rotis and the "rasperry" mattar (basically a mattar paneer dish made with indian cheese and peas).

I loved the biryani. The flavours were complex and not very overpowering. I would say that this is the second best I have had after Lahore Tikka House. My friend enjoyed the lamb and my vegetarian friend loved the mattar paneer.

All 3 of us asked for extra spicy and received dishes that were well flavoured and spicy. I would recommend this place. The presentation was great as well. I am not sure how much it cost as my friend paid for the bill.

HAVELLY: This is an all-you-can-eat Pakistani & Indian restaurant located in the west end. A group of us went on a Wednesday night and it was packed with families. The dinner buffet was $13 and well worth it. They had the usual salads and also offered a great chicken biryani, 3 meat dishes, 3 veggie dishes, beef kabab and dessert. I loved the biryani and the beef kabab. They also had a curry made with goat bones called "paaya". My friend enjoyed it and said it tasted like the "paaya" he had in India. I was not impressed with the dessert. They had a rice pudding which was not at all sweet and for some reason had a glue like consistency. They also had tea but this was not good as well. The tea was very watery. I was expecting chai tea but it was plain old tea. The restaurant serves halal meat and they don't serve alcohol. I would recommend this place for a group of people with big appetites.

IMHO, I would rate Biryani House an 8 out of 10 and Havelly a 7 out of 10.
