I just got back from Memphis and managed to get 3 bbq stops in, Germantown Commissary, Corky's and Tops on Getwell. The Commissary was much better than my earlier trips. In our group we had the ribs, bbq baked potato and the chopped sandwich, all were very good. As far as Corky's goes, I've found it to be inconsistent in recent years and this visit it was not very good. I had the ribs and they just were not good. It seems to be hit or miss with Corky's and I don't think I'll go through the hassle any more. I always try to stop at Tops on Getwell on my way back to the airport and as usual, I really think they do a pretty darn good job for having so many locations. The jumbo sandwich combo with beans, slaw and a coke for $5.15 is a deal, especially since its good.
My wife wouldn't let me eat bbq for every meal so we also went to Houston's on Poplar which is consistently good although the wait is a killer. Went to Blue Plate for breakfast which was great. I'm also amazed at how many Mexican restaurants have opened in the last several years. When I first started going to Memphis about all there was was Pancho's. Now there are so many, it's hard to choose. Anyway, we seem to be getting partial to El Mezcal on Perkins across from Davis-Kidd. I think it's pretty decent but we don't get much good Mexican up in Philly for comparison.
