Do Restaurants Ever Change Their Menus?

uncle moishy | Aug 17, 2005 07:02 PM

I'm not talking about for the 9 Days. I mean in general, and in a significant way. It seems to me that the kosher restaurants I go to hardly ever, if ever, change their menus.

As an example, I went to Orchidea recently and had a great meal. It is still, IMHO, the best kosher dairy restaurant in the NYC metro area. But they haven't changed their menu a lick since I first went there (props to the great Amy T) a year and a half ago. Not the salads and apps, not the mains, not the desserts. Only the specials change.

And as far as I can tell it's the same with every other kosher restaurant around.

I know, I should be grateful that I have an abundance of choices in metro NYC. Kosher eaters in most other cities are just happy to have somewhere -- anywhere -- to go. But once upon a time, I used to eat at not-so-kosher restaurants too. Some of them changed their menus (more than just a special or two) every day. The likelihood of having something new to try became a reason to go back.

Thanks for letting me vent. And if there's anyplace out there that's an exception to this rule, please please please let me know.
