My October visit to Reims started rather poorly, foodwise, with an indifferent kebap place.

Things started to look up with the next morning's tour of Champagne Pommery and the swig of Cuvee Louise (though I resented having to pay a supplement for the privilege). Since we were booked for nearby Taittinger in the afternoon, my companions asked if I could suggest a neighborhood place for our lunch instead of traveling back and forth to the center.

We had blown through our eating budget in Paris and Burgundy the week before. I stated that I wanted a simple and inexpensive plat du jour for the mid-day meal. Googling on the fly for plat du jour lunch near our current location, up popped Restaurant Au Plat du Jour only a short walk away!

The restaurant was empty when we arrived. Since we were on the early side, not too concerning. And it soon filled up with regulars who seemed to be neighborhood tradesmen and clerks, Working folks rather than tourists like us.

Some great movie posters and auto racing memorabilia make up the decor here.

The lunch menu's presented on a chalkboard. The Champagne list was rather undistinguished so we skipped ordering any wine.

The style of cuisine is comforting home cooking. My friend remarked that his Hachis de bouef a la Provençale was delicious and like something his grandmother would make for him after school.

The gluten-free and dairy-free option was a lovely omelet with cepes along with a side salad.

For me, a huge portion of rich tartiflette, crusty on the top and oozing with Reblochon cheese.

My tartiflette came with a plate of jambon and viande des Grisons, as well as a full plate of spritely mixed salad greens. This was far more than I could eat in one sitting.

To end, glace au caramel, that turned out to be from the same regional producer I had liked so much the night before. I was happy to have it a second time to share with my friend.

Our lunch bill came to 15 euros per person. A bargain.

Au Plat du Jour's food was simple and satisfying, just what I wanted that day. And it was a very convenient stop between Champagne cellar tours. Afterwards we walked off our lunch close by at the Basilique Saint-Remi de Reims, and I recommend that as well.
