report on recent visit to bistro jeanty and bouchon (long)

lunch at bistro jeanty was terrific. i had duck pate with wine poached pear for my appetizer and beef stew with carrot and peas and mashed potatoes for my entree. the pate was sooo creamy and the poached pear added just the right amount of sweetness to offset the richness of the pate, and it was RICH. the beef stew was incredible. the meat was so tender that i didn't have to use a knife to break up the meat but still retained it's flavor. the carrots and peas were cooked just right and the smashed potato creamy and buttery. my friend had the pig's feet salad as her appetizer and coq de vin as her entree. her salad was even better then my pate! they put together the pig feet parts into a terrine and served it in thick slices toped with a herb and lemon sauce. her coq de vin had a nice, smoky flavor and the chicken was also very tender. by this time, we were completely stuff but couldn't pass up dessert so we ordered their dessert special, vanilla ice cream with poach plums in wine sauce. i don't remember what type of liquor they used but it had a bitter flavor so the prune by itself was too bitter and the vanilla ice cream too sweet but when you eat the two together, it was awesome. including one glass of wine, ice tea, and coffee, the bill came out to be $90 for the meal after tax and tip.

for dinner, we went to bouchon. still full from lunch, she and i decided to share a french green bean salad and their grand seafood platter. really, really liked the salad. the beans were perfectly cooked so that it still retained it's bright green color and crunch but didn't taste "raw". the salad was composed to thin slices of heirloom tomato, red onion, fennel, and the beans. the dressing was a very light lemon vinaigrette that added flavor to the bean but didn't drown it. just what we wanted. our seafood platter was not as impressive. the platter consisted of 18 oyster, 9 clams, 9 mussels, 9 large shrimps, a quarter of a crab, and one whole lobster. the oysters were by far the best; small, plump, and creamy. the other seafood were just ok. i think my problem is that i'm using to eating cooked seafood hot straight from the steamer or the grill, not cold. dessert was another let down. my friend had a scoop each of vanilla and chocolate ice cream and a scoop of strawberry sorbet and i order the coffee pot de creme. my friend and i both agree that the vanilla tasted like medicine. we left it alone after the first bite. i couldn't figure out what the chocolate ice cream tasted like but it wasn't the intense dark chocolate flavor that i was expecting. my friend finally pinned it down and said the chocolate tasted like ovaltine. the strawberry sorbet was good but nothing special. my pot de creme would have been excellent except that the cinnamon flavor was too strong so it distracted from the coffee flavor. everytime i put a spoonful into my mouth, all i could think off was that it would taste so much better with less cinnamon. including two lemonade and two tea, this meal came out to be $100 after tax and tip.

a word about the services. at bistro jeanty, it was warm, professional, and attentive. our server stopped by serval time through out the meal to make sure that we had everything that we wanted and to see if we were enjoying our dishes. bouchon wasn't bad either, it just lacked the same attentiveness.
