I took my sweetie to Beau Rivage yesterday for a romantic birthday dinner, and I figured I'd contribute my review. All in all it was a pleasant, romantic experience, the food was mostly good, and the decor had a rustic, old-world feel to it...and if either of us had had a less quirky sense of humor, we might have been bothered by the very tipsy patron dancing in front of the rather-loud piano.
My date's french onion soup was wonderful: cheesy, beefy, and oniony as you would expect. My escargots were as tender as they could be, swimming in their little pools of garlic and butter...though somehow I don't think I've ever had butter that tasted less buttery. It sort of reminded me of ghee. (Based on this experience, and a previous one in Paris, I've decided that escargots Just Aren't That Exciting.)
The baked brie with walnuts and mango chutney was out of this world. I'm absolutely going to recreate that recipe for my next dinner party.
Our entrees were less exciting. My chicken roulade was okay, but the gravy was very salty (I usually like a lot of salt, but this was a bit much for me.) Also, this was a dish that I feel confident I could whip up at home after work. The lobster in my date's lobster linguini was, sadly, somewhat overcooked. But the rest of her dish was quite good.
I'm not a big tiramisu fan, but she assured me that the tiramisu was one of the best she'd ever eaten.
The bill (no wine) came out to $120, which was reasonable for the overall experience, but if I were going just for the food I would probably have felt disappointed.
