Thanks for all of your recommendations. We spent a week in Key Biscayne and went to a bunch of restaurants, so I figured I'd report back!
Saturday - La Cofradia - This wasn't highly recommended here, but the menu sounded good and I had read some good things about it. The menu was a bit "bipolar", half italian, half peruvian, making it difficult to choose what to order. We had the trio of ceviche, a pork and sweet potato dish and an octopus salad special to start. They were all good, not great. For entrees we had filet, lamb and grouper. My grouper was nicely cooked with a escabeche sauce, very tasty. The other two dishes were very average, they could have come from any restaurant, basic accompaniments, nothing special at all. The ingredients overall were very good, everything was cooked properly, just nothing to write home about.
Sunday - Table 8 - We went here last year and had the best meal of our trip, and this is the only place we decided to come back to again. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. I started with the burrata which is actually what I had last year, and it was good, but nowhere near the last time. For entrees my daughter had the ny strip which was good, my husband had the scallops with lemon risotto, which was okay flavorwise but the risotto was very undercooked and crunchy. I can't even remember what I had at this point. The restaurant itself is odd...you almost feel like you are imposing by being there. Definitely a huge disappointment after last years fabulous meal and we definitely wouldn't go back.
Monday - Michaels Genuine - What a great place! We ate outside on the patio and shared a bunch of small and medium plates. We had the frogs legs, the panzanella salad, a double yolk egg in a ramekin with tomatoes, cheese and some microgreens, the tuna tartar, the mussels, the pork belly and the crispy beef cheek. For dessert my daughter got the chocolate banana split without the banana (don't ask!) and it was delicious. Everything about this place is great, we probably would have gone back if not for the Bruni article bunging up the availability!!
Tuesday - We stopped into El Gran Inka on Key Biscayne for lunch after swimming with the dolphins and were very pleasantly surprised. We shared some corvina ceviche, octopus, fried calamari and some potato thing. It was very tasty and I would definitely give it a try for dinner sometime. We were supposed to go to Sardinia for dinner, but couldn't eat another bite, so we cancelled.
Wednesday - Azul - This was by far the best meal we had the whole week. (Of course I wouldn't compare it to Michaels since they are very different places). I had an octopus salad to start, warm and tender, over a greek type salad. My husband had the trio of tuna, one piece with crab, one tartar and I can't remember the 3rd, but the quality of the tuna was out of this world. My daughter got the caviar with brioche and the usual accoutrements (she's not a cheap date). For entrees, she had the duck, which was a sliced breast and then a confit leg. My husband had the salmon and I had the chicken (which I never order) but it was so good. A huge breast and also a leg over a fava bean puree and a little pot of "dumplings" on the side. We passed on dessert, but they brought a plate with some little truffles and cookies and then brought my daughter an enormous chocolate chip cookie to take home.
Thursday - Talula - I was really looking forward to this place after hearing all the great things about it. It was almost empty, only 2 tables when we came in. For apps we got the tuna tartare, caesar salad and a salad with bleu cheese, walnuts and dried cranberries. Unfortunately I had some bizarre reaction to the odor of my husbands bleu cheese while looking at my tuna and I literally could not choke down a bite of food the whole time we were there. And I love bleu cheese. Weird. In any case, my grouper looked tasty, and my daughter loved her chicken and my husband loved his snapper!
Friday - Had a reservation at Por Fin, but cancelled and stayed in.
Saturday - Monday - off to Disneyworld, we won't even discuss the food!
So thanks again for all the help, long long story short, we would definitely go back to Michaels and Azul!
