I've been a fan of Cane Rosso for a long time (the Ferry Building location was my go to lunch spot at my old job) - great locally sourced food for lunch (or dinner) that was simple and well-prepared.
So when I changed jobs, she was kind enough to open her new place near my new office - Red Dog opened a few months ago on 2nd St in SOMA, near Folsom. I've been there a couple of times for lunch, and three times for dinner, so I think it's arrived at a pretty stable level of performance now.
Her food hasn't changed dramatically from Cane Rosso, so there is a small, but quality selection of starters and entrees, several of which I've tried and liked, including:
- Deviled Ham Scotch Egg (in moderation though - these would give you a heart attack if you ate them often. Plan to share with 1 or 2 others)
- Little gem, sweet pea and bacon salad (nicely balanced)
- Braised shortribs with horseradish gremolata (perfectly tender and rich, nice bite from the horseradish and rich, soppable sauce
- smoked Pekin duck breast - served nicely medium-rare, tender, and with a chewy farro salad on the side
- Burger - good size and properly juicy, nice bun, good fixings and great fries
- Crispy smashed potatoes - these were simple new potatoes that appeared to be oven roasted, then semi-smashed - simple prep but well done and a good complement to the above dishes
- Shishito peppers - not much to say here, they're well-executed, getting pretty common these days
The menu changes now and then, but this has been added to my "go to" list of places for lunch or dinner - it's especially nice after about 7 PM when all the local techies leave the bar and head home. Nice booths and there is also a back room that seems to hold 10-15 people that would be good either for a business or family dinner.
Her food isn't glamorous or fashionable, but I feel like it is a solid place with good service that I can come back to anytime and be happy, of which there are too few places these days.
