Does anyone who saw The Vertical Ray of the Sun recognize the bumpy-skinned, melon sized fruit that when it's cut open has a central cavity filled with reddish stuff and huge reddish brown seeds? (The characters say that they will add the seeds to the rice to make it taste good.) This movie lingers over food preparation, like The Scent of Green Papaya, another movie by the same director. I asked the owner of Kitchen Arts and Letters in NYC to find out what this fruit is, but he hasn't come up with an answer yet. It is NOT durian or jackfruit. What is it?
