Food looked ok but there are pleny of other places to go in NYC that don't have a disrespectful waitstaff.
My boyfriend and I dropped by the Aegean for a late dinner. The appetizer (tarama salata) was overly salty and not as creamy as others I've had but the bread was good. Other diners' food looked ok. However, I'll never go back because of the rude service. Never again.
Service was bad from the start and only got worse. The restaurant was only a quarter full but no one was around to greet us. The waitstaff was just standing around. We finally flagged down a waitress and she seated us. She also happened to be our waitress for the remainder of the meal. The food came out quick enough but my entree was missing one of the dish's main components (tzatziki sauce). When I asked the waitress about the missing sauce, she told me the kitchen ran out. What decent Greek restaurant runs out of tzatziki sauce? No apology came from her but one of the other waiters did apologize and offered to replace the entree with something else.
However, before I was given a menu to make a second choice, a busboy snidely commented "TOO BAD THE MENU DOESN'T HAVE PICTURES" as he walked by our table. At first I couldn't believe he said that but the more I thought about it, the angrier I became. I still don't really understand why he made the comment: my boyfriend and I are both professionals (attorney & engineer) who had no trouble understanding the menu and we were more than patient with the waitstaff's inadequacies. When I asked to speak the managment, the waitress insisted there was no manager on site. When I asked her the name of the manager and of the busboy, she insisted that SHE complain on my behalf. No way would I let such an insult go by without complaining!! After MUCH prodding, I finally got the name of the manager (Jim) and the busboy (John). The supervisor finally came to our table, apologized and explained that the busboy was a jerk who he'd like to fire. Then, the busboy comes to our table, half-heartedly apologized for his comment (stupid grin on his face and insincerity dripping from his tone) but then the supervisor and another waiter pulled him away from our table.
Needless to say, dinner was ruined so we calmly paid our bill and walked out. I called the Aegean and its sister restaurant (Caprice Cafe on Columbus Ave) for two days. I never got a hold of the manager but I don't think it matters b/c other management I spoke to were dismissive and unapologetic.
