in praise of Crisfields Meat Market in Rye, NY

A long, long time ago I posted a query here looking to find a butcher - anywhere - that was a true butcher. Someone who would/could actually order and cut meats to custom order. I was frustrated by all the pseudo butchers at supermarkets who knew less than I did about most meats.

Someone way back then recommended Crisfields on Purchase Street in Rye. I remember looking for it - didn't find it and didn't look again. Lately I've been looking for good, whole brisket to smoke and couldn't find anywhere that would sell me a whole brisket. They only sell the flat of the brisket. I tried every supermarket, "meat market", whole foods, costco, Sam's etc. and no luck. I decided to try and find Crisfields' again and am glad I did.

They are a true old butcher shop. Knowledgeable and friendly. At first I thought they would be inordinantly expensive, but they weren't. While very slightly more than a supermarket, they are still far less than Whole Foods (I saw aged porterhouse there for around $10/pound).

Not only did the guy say he could order brisket for me, he told me to give him a few days in advance and they'd hang it for me for a few days to age a bit. No extra charge. And the price is $2.99. Not as cheap as you can find in some parts of the county, but only $.50 more than costco sells its brisket flats. Awesome.

Anyhow, if you are looking for it, don't go by Yahoo/Google Maps. It will point you to the wrong Purchase street. This place is in downtown Rye. Go to Purchase Street, find #61, then go behind the building in the parking lot and you'll see it.

Thanks to whoever it was way back then who recommended the place. Very cool.
