POST TRIP THOUGHTS ON NOLA

RICHARD | Mar 28, 2004 08:04 AM

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIVE IN NOLA CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BEAUTIFUL CITY AND ALL IT HAS TO OFFER.EVERYONE WE MET WAS VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. WE SPENT A LOT OF TIME MEANDERING AROUND THE GARDEN DISTRICT ON BIKES. WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE COLLECTION OF VICTORIANS, GREEK REVIVAL AND SHOTGUN HOMES. IF THERE IS ANYPLACE ELSE LIKE THIS PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

ACCOMODATIONS
WE STAYED UPTOWN AT THE CHIMES B&B. IT WAS CLEAN, COMFORTABLE AND UNPRETENTIOUS. ALL THE ROOMS OPEN ONTO A SMALL BRICK COURTYARD WHICH IS A PERFECT PLACE TO RELAX WIH A MORNING CUP OF COFFEE OR AFTERNOON GLASS OF WINE. THE CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST SERVED EVERY MORNING IS A SELECTION OF FRESH FRUIT (PINEAPPLE, CANTELOPE, STRAWBERRIES), A FRENCH BAGUETTE AND OTHER ASSORTED FRESH BAKED BREADS, ASSORTED CROISSANTS, CHEESE PLATE, YOGURT AND LEBNI, COFFEE AND FRESH SQUEEZED OJ. THE FACT THAT THEY TAKE THE TIME TO FRESH SQUEEZE THE OJ EVERY MORNING IS AN INDICATION OF THE PRIDE AND AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL THROUGHOUT.

FOOD
TUESDAY - LUNCH AT NAPOLEON HOUSE IN THE FQ - SHARED A WARM MUFFELETTA, JUMBALAYA, MY WIFE HAD A PIMM'S CUP AND I HAD MY FIRST OF MANY ABITA BEERS. DINNER AT PASCAL'S MANALE. HAD THE BBQ SHRIMP, THEY WERE HUGE AND I DIDN'T KNOW THEY DON'T CLEAN THE SHRIMP. THEY ARE SERVED HEAD AND ALL. MY SHRIMP WERE STARING AT ME BEFORE I TORE THEIR HEADS OFF, PEELED THEM AND ATE THEM. DON'T GET ME WRONG , THEY WERE REALLY TASTY. I JUST WASN'T EXPECTING THAT.

WEDNESDAY
BREAKFAST AT THE CHIMES
LUNCH AT CASAMENTO'S -LOVED THE FRIED SRIMP AND OYSTERS, GUMBO, MORE ABITA.
DINNER AT UPPERLINE - SUPERB, HAD THERE FOUR COURSE PRIX FIX DINNER. MY WIFE WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH HER PECAN PIE, SHE FELT THE CRUST WAS PREMADE COMMERCIAL.

THURSDAY - MY DAY OF GREATEST GLUTTONY STARTED OUT WITH AN EARLY MORNING BIKE RIDE DOWN TO CAFE DU MONDE
FOR BEIGNETS AND CAFE AU LAIT
BREAKFAST - HAD A LIGHT BREAKFAST AT THE CHIMES AND THEN PROCEDED TO TAKE OUR NIECE ( LOYOLA STUDENT) TO THE BLUEBIRD CAFE AND I COULDN'T RESIST THE HUEVOS RANCHEROS.

LUNCH -WALKED AROUND THE FQ AND STOPPED AT THE ACME OYSTER HOUSE HAD FRIED SHRIMP PLATTER, MORE ABITA.

DINNER- HAD TO CANCEL OUR RESERVATION AT BRIGSTENS BECAUSE OUR FRIEND WAS RUNNING LATE. ENDED UP AT LA CREPE NANOU AND SHARED A BIG BOWL OF VERY TASTY MUSSELS. THEY WERE SO GOOD I HAD TO MOP UP WITH BREAD. CRAB CREPE, FISH OF THE DAY WAS POMPAN0 ALL VERY GOOD.

DESSERT- OUR FRIEND TOOK US TO THE PALACE CAFE FOR WHITE CHOCOLATE BREAD PUDDING. IT WAS JUST OK. THE BANANAS FOSTER WAS EXCEPTIONAL.

FRIDAY- UP FOR EARLY MORNING BIKE RIDE TO LAKE PONCHATRAIN , HAD TO WORK OFF SOME CALORIES FROM THE DAY BEFORE.

BREAKFAST - THE CHIMES. THEY GET THEIR BREADS AND CROISSANTS FROM A FRENCH BAKERY ON MAGAZINE STREET, THE BOULANGERIE, TOP NOTCH. I WENT THERE AND HAD AN APRICOT DANISH THAT WAS TO DIE FOR. ALSO THERE IS A RELATIVELY NEW TEA ROOM FURTHER UPTOWN ON MAGAZINE CALLED INDONIQUE. HE BLENDS HIS OWN CHAI WHICH IS VERY GOOD AND NOT TO SWEET LIKE MOST OF THE COMMERCIAL MIXES. MY WIFE RUNS A TEAROOM AND SHE WAS IMPRESSED WITH HIS CHAI.

LUNCH AT COMMANDERS PALACE- MY 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - HAD A GREAT OVERALL EXPERIENCE THERE, GREAT AMBIANCE AND LOVED THE WAY THEY SERVED EVERYONE AT THE TABLE SIMULTANEOUSLY. I ENJOYED THE TURTLE SOUP, PORK TENDERLOIN. THE BREAD PUDDING SOUFFLE, STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE AND PECAN PIE DESSERTS WERE EXCELLENT. LOVED THE .25 MARTINIS , WE HAD 5 BETWEEN THE THREE OF US ( MY NIECE CAME ALONG). WE REALIZED LATER THAT OUR BAR BILL WAS 1.50, THEY CHARGED US FOR 6 MARTINIS, OUTRAGEOUS.

DINNER - WE WERE SO FULL FROM LUNCH WE DIDN'T MANAGE TO GO OUT TO DINNER UNTIL 10:00, WALKED BACK TO LA CREPE NANOU FOR A LIGHT MEAL, A BOWL OF MUSSELS AND A SALAD NICOISE. DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR A DESSERT CREPE. THIS PLACE WAS SO BUSY THAT WE HAD TO WAIT FOR A TABLE AT THAT HOUR.

THANKS AGAIN TO EVERY ONE WHO ANSWERED MY PREVIOUS POSTS. OUR VISIT TO NOLA WAS ENRICHED BY ALL THE INFO YOU PROVIDED. CAN'T BELIEVE I DIDN'T MAKE IT TO BRIGSTENS OR JACQUE-IMO'S. NOW I HAVE A REASON TO GO BACK.
RICHARD
