The plague of clueless bartenders

One aspect of the craft beer explosion that really sucks is all the people smelling money cashing in on the trend by opening reclaimed wood-bedecked watering holes with a menu long on good beer but servers and bartenders who know jack shit about what they're serving.

My favorite current example of dumb shit said by know-nothings is the claim that flat beer is "supposed to be like that". I've encountered this idiotic statement about a half dozen times in the last year. Once with a saison, which is particularly funny.

The other night I had a two-fer: flat witbier that's supposed to be like that, and being poured a taste of what was labeled as a brown ale that was pale gold. I held it up to the guy and said, "you're really going to insist that this is a brown ale?" He led me into the cold box, I'm guessing to prove me wrong, where he was surprised to see that it wasn't a brown ale - despite the pale yellow color of the beer.

This is really bad news for craft beer, and I believe it will eventually cause some losses because customers who may not know much about beer will not be well-served by establishments this lacking in clue.
