in Corona del Mar, California.
I just got word that Mistral in Corona del Mar has now been sold to Kelly Grey (model and executive for and owner's daughter of St. John Knits - located in Irvine, California.)
The location on Heliotrope is in a house turned into a restuarant and has housed The Pirates Inn, Trees, Mistral and a few other restaurants over the years. All have become a somewhat "Cheers" bar, yet most recently at Mistral it became so popoular in the bar for 21-35 year-olds that it was constantly crowded to the point of being 4 X over the room capacity limit. You could not move 1/2 foot before bumping into a person. The piano has long been the entertainment in that location (since it was Trees Restaurant) and people would sing from across the room and 10 or 15 people at a time sometimes. The food side was not as crowded and served nice French cuisine. Its actually a very small facility - both the bar side and the restaurant side.
I wonder if the reputation of the location will continue. Kelly has no experience in the restaurant field except that she would go to Mistral to let her hair down on occasion. However, with her family fortune behind her and her continued work with St. John's Knits, there is no question she has the financial backing. It is reported that she wants it to he "LA Style" (what do you think that means?).
