The Place - San Diego

On my excursion to run errands at lunch today, I found myself in the neighborhood of 70th and El Cajon Blvd. Pondering what to pick up to take back for lunch, I remembered The Place (Glatt's) and Henry the E's rave about their pastrami. Parking in their lot involves timing and the ability to get into some tight spaces, but you can find parking on the street. Once in, I was greeted by a tall, handsome gentleman who smiled and said, "Can we bother you in any way?" I ordered my sandwich and proceeded to browse a bit. Nice selection of items for sale in the grocery section. Obviously a loyal group of patrons have come to love the place, as they seemed well-acquainted with the staff. Service wasn't quick, but they were busy and so very friendly.

Now, the pastrami: I've obviously never had good pastrami before, because this stuff was amazing. So tender, no fat (as I've sometimes come to find at D.Z. Akins), and just the right amount. I mean, I appreciate the fact that places like D.Z. Akins pile their pastrami high on the bread, but, frankly (and those of you who know me, don't laugh) I have a hard time eating the darned thing. Methinks now the "piling high" is an attempt to compensate for a lack of flavor. I even shared one (and only one!) strip of pastrami with a co-worker who claims there are no good pastrami sandwiches in San Diego (he's from Philly). He immediately asked for the address. Do yourself a favor. Go check this place out. 'Scuse me......that'd be The Place!
