Pickled Tomatoes

I just pickled a big 4 Liter jar of tomatoes. The recipe did not state how to cover the tomatoes. Do I have to seal the jar ? Or just cover the toms with the brine-garlic-jalepino pepper solution ? Will it get moldy. The recipe says just let it sit for 14 days and test for flavor.
