To my personal relief, it is not too late to obtain locally grown strawberries and raspberries have just begun.
I just got off the phone with Thompson Strawberry Farm who predict they have one more week of strawberries. Given the recent rains, I predict these are going to be rather large berries. Other years when it has been dry, they have been small and sweet. In any case, I cannot postpone as I am out of homemade strawberry jam. If you pick your own, they give you wax covered 4 quart box to place your pickings. Each box is $6-something, but if you pick 6 boxes, then you pay for 5 boxes with the 6th free. Sometimes the 6th box is just agony to pick because your helpers have run off to explore the farm, but your sense of economy drives you! Oh you can buy them picked for $10 a gallon.
Thompson's has rasberries have just begun. These are more expensive. They also plant sugar snap peas but these leave as quickly as they are available. I have only hit the sugar snap pea season once in 10 years. They do car-loads of pumpkins in the Fall.
I will post a follow up tomorrow when I return from the trenches. BTW, Highway 50 is just over the Wisconsin border. It is where Woodmans and a number of discount malls are located.
