During my June 2017 visit to Ensenada, we drove by Pez Urbano Street Food a few times. On my last day in town, we finally stopped to try it out.
Pez Urbano is a small shack with stools for seating and off-street parking.
It specializes in ceviche and sashimi made with local fish. A couple specials are offered each day.
We started with the Ceviche de jurel. This was already prepped to be served up in a flash. The silvery skin was left on the thick chunks of flesh. The fish was mostly cured and opaque. Well-seasoned, there was nothing wrong with it, simply that I prefer the less marinated, less cured/cooked style.
Next we tried the Ceviche Mandarina from the specials board. This was prepped to order and more to my liking. Freshly cubed ahi tuna was bathed in tangerine juice, soy sauce and sesame oil for a sweet-salty marinade, and combined with mandarin orange sections, julienne of carrots, black sesame and red onions. Gorgeous to see and to taste.
The two staffers were quite friendly and offered us complimentary tastes of their best sellers. This was the traditional ceviche, fully cured in lime juice.
And a bite of the pate' ahumado (smoked fish pate').
The seafood was all served ice cold and fresh as can be. The prices are about the same as the street carts charge. You can take a seat here and also order a beer while eating al fresco.
We enjoyed Pez Urbano very much and will be returning.
