berkleybabe and I celebrated our 18th anniversary at the Golden Mushroom near Detroit. A brief post is in order praising the best potato this Irish Catholic boy ever had along with a brief update on the Golden Mushroom

The Golden Mushroom has long been one of Detroit's jewels, for many years under the leadership of Milos Chekla, who retired a few years ago. It has long specialized in mushrooms (of course) and game dishes. An expensive, expense account sort of place, I thought the restuarant suffered a bit after Chekla left - or perhaps the heavy food and 50's-60's decor just seemed too old-fashioned for our tastes. Well, no longer. What a meal we had!

The pheasant pate, silky mushroom soup, buffalo rib-eye were uniformly superb, but the highlight was the Peruvian purple potatoes, served Lyonnaise style, as an accompaniment to babe's loin of lamb. I have never tasted a spud like these - they were simply the essence of potato, a concentrated potato purity.

When babe asked the server when they acquired the potatoes, the server said, "Well, Peru." She looked puzzled for a moment, then told us of a couple local groceries who carry Peruvian purples. We'll be getting some tomorrow.
