[Penang] Traditional Indian-Muslim breakfast at Hutton Lane

M M Ghafoor's food-stall in a back-lane off Hutton Lane (near the intersection with Penang Road) has been operating on this spot for nearly 60 years.

Its claim-to-fame: a substantial breakfast dish of Nasi Dalca, steamed rice splashed on top with generous amount of spicy, aromatic and very tasty dhal (yellow lentil) curry with eggplants, carrots and potatoes. There are curried chicken, mutton or fish to complement the dhal curry & rice. I opted for the curried chicken, and it was delicious.

If rice with curries sound too heavy to start your day with, Mr Ghafoor also offers the old-fashioned "Roti Bengali",a local bread, sliced thickly, buttered and toasted over a charcoal brazier. The toasts will be cut into squares, put in a deep plate and topped with soft-boiled eggs.

You eat sitting on little stools by wobbly plastic tables, watching the traffic go by on Hutton Lane. Little plastic bottles of light soy-sauce and white pepper on the tables are the sole condiments for this - it was simple, but perfection on a (plastic) plate.
