A Penang closure

Not that anyone could possibly care (other than staff), but the Penang on Third Avenue at East 11th Street went down last week.

As I understand it, the place was started a half-dozen years ago by a bitter and vindicitive brother of the original Penang(s)' owner. The space (formerly a pawn shop!) was all tarted up in Polynesian/Malaysian frou-frou that was actually kind of cool, in a Tiki Hut sort of way. But the food? Beyond atrocious! They got NOTHING right the only time I was in there. The four of us couldn't believe it!

Naturally, the place was usually deserted--I'm astonished it made it this long.

Hopefully, something wonderful will go in there. It's actually a very interesting space.
