[PDX] Roux and Olea

This won't be as detailed as the Genoa post but I figured someone might be interested.

Roux - Three of us went on Saturday night for a late dinner. We had some problems with the resorvations which started things off a bit ugly (we confirmed Sat afternoon for a 7:45 seating but when we got there they said we had missed our 7:00 reservation and would need to wait until a table opened) we ended up having one of the better meals I have eaten in PDX this year.

The place was packed and a bit noisy but we enjoyed the feeling of the restaurant. Our server was hit and miss and was probably the weakest part of the evening.

Dinner - Started with the trio of sausages (duck, chorizo and andouie) and the baked oysters topped with a crawfish and bread crumb mixture. The sausages were good but could have used some more mustard, we decided the duck one was the best of the three but all of them were gone when we were finished. The oysters were not great; they had a huge briney taste to them that did not agree with me, I had one and moved on. Salads, there were two of the butter lettuce version with a basic vinaigrette and I had the wonderful croque monsieur salad. My salad was excellent and would probably server for a full entree if you were trying to save on something. The ham and cheese were excellent and the mustard dressing tied it together nicely. Entrees, stuffed trout with crawfish looked decent, the smoked short ribs were over smoked and a bit cold when served and the roasted chicken which was a bit overdone for my liking but tasted very good. The highlight of the night was the desserts. The frozen chocolate soufflé was excellent with bananas crunchy on the out side. My wife horded over her peanut donuts and chicory coffee ice cream, these replaced her favorite Harrison donut dessert. I had a "Jack and Coke" sundae which was three scoops of vanilla ice cream and a cola whiskey sauce on top, it was very good.

Olea - this place did not seam to do much for me. The service was almost disinterested and the menu is far too varied to make any sense. I had the pot pie and felt it was very much over priced. My wife had the halibut and enjoyed it but I did not get much from it. The dates were mushy all around and the almonds were almost fake tasting. We were there around 7 on Sunday and there were only 3 other tables seated. I don't think we will go back, if we are looking for dinner in the Pearl, Blue Hour will get our $$.
