[PDX] Middle Eastern/Halal Market Survey...

extramsg | Jun 3, 200502:27 PM

Finally took the time to finish my report on Middle Eastern/Halal markets in Portland. I don't think there are any others, but if there are please speak up. As always, linked below is the full report with many, many photos and more details, including addresses, etc.

My favorite of the markets was probably Halal Meat just off 99W between 217 and I-5. They have a very nice and clean selelction of meat (goat, lamb, etc) and will even sell the head. No produce, but they do have a connected deli. The deli has some of the better rotisserie chicken I've had in Portland, plus falafel made to order, and other tasty dishes at decent prices.

Ya Hala's market, International Food, is the only one with produce. They had green almonds earlier in the year and other items. It's not a great selection of produce, but it's decent. They have a nice little selection of snacky things, such as coasted nuts, in bags and was the only place with wines, I think. btw, they own Barbur Food now and are converting it.

Beaverton Halal has good meats, but is pretty tiny otherwise. They won't sell the head, but they'll cut anything to order. The picture included is from their store. They do have the best selection of sweets, including several filo pastries and jalebis (or whatever the Middle Eastern name for them is).

Madina is just a tiny little corner in the back of a Desi market, Bazaar. Again, they have whole lamb and goat and will cut to order.
