[PDX] Hakatamon Japanese Rest.

Leonardo | Jul 29, 200506:31 PM

Went for lunch with my Japanese girlfriend.

Took a seat at the sushi bar. When a table opened up I asked for it, but they insisted on giving it to people who came in after us, even though no food had yet been delivered to us & we hadn't dirtied the space. The next table to open up I was adamant I wanted it & was entitled to it. They begrudgingly gave it to us, but it was clear they didn't want to. Bad start. Bad attitude. But service did definately improve after that.

Sushi: avocado & CA rolls. 1st was good, CA was full of that mayonnaisey fake crab salad crap. Ick.

Tempura was really good & crispy, nice mix of large shrimp, vegies, & sweet potatoes.

Miso soup was good, except for the fact that waitress handled the bowl by the rim (whence we slurp it..ick again).

The mackerel was tasty, my girlfriend thought it oily, but that's the nature of the fish, I think.

The yakko tofu (cold) was good, with generous large bonito flakes.

Best was the udon, of which there are many kinds. They make it there fresh, I believe.

Good value, lots of edible food. Repeat? Yes, but won't make a special trip to Beaverton.
