Pawpaws at Union Square Greenmarket

eeee | Nov 11, 2009 11:08 AM

I came across a very intriguing fruit at the Greenmarket today - fresh pawpaws. apparently they are a native North American fruit that often grows wild, though the man selling them said he was cultivating them in the Hudson Valley. A Brazilian woman who tasted a slice said they tasted like cherimoyas (sp? a fruit I am not familiar with.) I found them delightfully sweet and custardy. I bought a few and have already eaten one. they have somewhat large and annoying pits inside so I just peeled them and scooped the soft fresh out. in any case, a delicious novelty.
