Pattaya Thai and Japanese Restaurant

Here's a new place on the corner of 73 Ave and Bell Boulevard in Oakland Gardens, Queens, that seats maybe 10 people. Looks like a smarter lunch place. Has a future! The 3' high Buddha, centrally located, is the first hint that these folks put more than ingredients into their food. They mean it! Surrounding them, however, is a neighborhood that probably finds any Asian restaurant that is not serving Chinese food to be "foreign." Alas! The neighborhood has somewhat intimidated the chef, who must please the locals, but is also proud to satisfy the more demanding client. The "spicy" dishes start out a little too gentle, but the chef will adjust the spices for you...ask for "Thai spicy." No problem.

Mom and pop are an eager and very pleasant young couple who cook and serve really good Thai food. I had Green Curry - fairly spicy and delicious. The chef assured me that, next time, the spice can be adjusted to my specifics. It was. My lady love had Chicken with Lemon Grass - sweeter than usual, still tasty. At another seating, Pad Thai was scrumptious. The Massaman Curry was also wonderful. The Lunch Specials are a steal. They serve a few beers and various Sakais. We didn't try the Japanese fare. Come by if you are anywhere nearby, this is a neighborhood place, not showy but earnest, that, I think, is already better than it has any right to be.
