Last night, we decided to pop into what is allegedly the best diner in the New Haven region (claims the Advocate). We were underwhelmed. We did our classical diner thing and got some nameless red wine; it was eminently drinkable, and got us off to what we assumed was a good start. Then my companion's chicken-and-stars soup arrived; it was ok, rather than particularly good (the broth tasted a little canned), but, most troublingly, it wasn't completely hot. Then our entrees arrived; the fries were actually very good, but both the chicken souvlaki and the gyro were bland and drowning in iceburg lettuce (as opposed to meat, which would have been preferred).
Did we order poorly? Are there better diners?
