I noticed this place on Fifth Ave across from Tractor Room yesterday- opened two days ago (3750 Fifth Ave). An Italian cafe that actually serves eggs for breakfast, but somehow the gelato seemed to be selling better- at 9 am.
After only one visit, I feel comfortable saying that the place feels like it has staying power- Hillcrest is certainly in need of some cafe alternatives, and this is a good one. VERY Italian- they are brewing Danesi caffe and making their gelato from scratch at their Little Italy location and even have the Italian cornetti that I learned to love in Italy.
Their menu is simple: panini, salads and salumi and cheese plates, and a case with some nice-looking baked goods, including the elusive sfogliatella. Their breakfast egg offerings are basically salads with a side of eggs, and if you order your eggs omelette style, they arrive shipwrecked- not really an omelette at all, and dressed with sweet balsamic vinegar- just very odd. In fact, the whole place is a little odd in the sense that it feels like it was transported directly from a Roman suburb. But the manager/owner, Francesco, is really nice, and should have no trouble winning over his neighboring apartment-dwellers.
