Last year during the close of Dodger Season, I happily made a trip to Orleans and York's original location for a Gumbo Mumbo sandwich. It was the perfect thing to wash down with an overpriced Stadium beer. I had recently found out that they were planning to open a DTLA location and I mused that if they opened by next season, they'd their location would be set.
Well they finally opened the location, a little past opening day, but the hit is indeed here. There was reported lines out the door and today I had P. bring me a couple of sandwiches to compare.
When he asked what I wanted, I asked for grilled shrimp, which I thought would last the train trip home (The new location is near the Pershing Square, Grand Central Market exit). He decided to take the risk and he also got the fried shrimp.
The verdict... GREAT. The flavors were spot on. The bread was still wonderful. The crack sauce (Which they have now named Sami Sauce, but if you ask for crack sauce, they know what it is) is just as good.
Surprisingly the Fried Shrimp held up pretty well! They just know how to construct a sandwich, the spread on the bottom, a good cushion of not soggy lettuce to perch the shrimp up the bread also was quite crisp. This is exactly why I fell in love with this place. Not only is a great value, but they really put thought and care in developing and preparing the sandwich.
The Grilled Shrimp was a new sandwich to me. Just like in the fried version, the number of shrimp were plentiful and cooked perfectly. This sandwich did sog up on the trip because it actually comes pre-drizzled with crack sauce. All in all though, it held together wonderfully and was way too easy to inhale.
With many more games to come, I'm happy to report this location is indeed worthy of the original.
