How to order a small qty of fish?

This drives me crazy:

I live by myself. I don't want to freeze fish so when I shop I try to order exactly what I'm going to eat on that day/next day. A good portion for me is about 0.6lb.

Just try asking the fishmonger or supermarket counter person for 0.6lb. Yes, he's standing at a digital scale that's calibrated in 0.01lb increments. It's a snap right?

He looks at you like you're speaking some language from New Guinea. Typically he pulls out some gigantic container, perhaps he thinks you've ordered 6lb.

I've tried requesting 2/3lb. Same thing. I'm not talking about one store (though I often shop at Steve's C-Town on 9th St. Bklyn), it seems to be everywhere I go in NYC. (I tried to post this to the NYC boards but the mods blocked me!)

1/2lb is understood ok, but that quantity is a tad skimpy for me. Any suggestions?
