NYC Chowhound Trip Report: 4 Sushi Places

-- Azami: Went there for the first time, since it was highly recommended here...i thought it was good but not great...the two sashimi orders we started with (bonito tataki and albacore) tasted a bit dry and warm...the sushi redeemed these fairly well, especially the hamachi and anago and unagi...i'd go back, but i found it slightly overrated at first impression...

-- Sushi Ike: my fav from my previous LA trip...and still my clear favorite...with the exception of some lackluster maguro, everything was stellar, esp. the salmon skin roll and the raw shrimp sashimi...service was friendly and wonderful and they indulged my terrible Japanese-speaking very gracefully...a great meal...

-- Hide Sushi: pretty bad...i don't understand why my friend recommended it...some of the sashimi (esp. hamachi) was good, but the sushi had possibly the worst rice i've ever tasted: dry crumbly stuff that tasted like it'd been sitting in a chinese takeout container for a few days...nice enough chefs but i'll prob never return...

-- Sasabune: an old favorite from when i lived in LA...went there for a solo omakase lunch and it was almost too much food...i prefer this place just for sashimi...while my friends wax poetic about the warm rice, etc, i find it a little sweet for my taste...still, the scallops and butterfish and uni and toro: all delicious...

Looking forward to trying more places on my next trip...
