Nuts in your pumpkin pie?

Not a streusel-type of topping with nuts and brown sugar, etc.

I'm talking about chopped nuts mixed into your pumpkin pie mix.

I just made a pumpkin pie with chopped walnuts incorporated directly into the filling and was pleasantly surprised at how it tasted -- both flavor-wise and texturally.

In many ways this wasn't really a pumpkin pie because, for me, one of the sine qua non of pumpkin pie is the creamy, and smooth velvety texture of the filling. With nuts, it takes that entire dimension away from the pie.

But that said, what's lost in texture is more than made up in terms of additional flavor and a different type of mouth-feel. In certain respects, it's like a lighter version of pecan pie.

Do you add nuts directly into your pumpkin pie mix?
