Last week I asked this board for advice concerning whether to go to Bo Brooks or Mama's this weekend. We had family in town, and I was looking for seafood, a good atmosphere, and if possible a water view. The responses varied, with recommending Bo Brooks and others defending it. One person recommended Nicks, for the view mostly. We went to Nicks a few times last summer, but always found the food just average (but the atmosphere fun and the view great). So given the varied responses here I checked out some more reviews of Bo Brooks, and what ultimately made me discount it were the reviews on AOL Cityguide. While most reviewers said the food wasn't bad, everyone said the service was absolutely horrible. Going out to eat with a larger group, including a toddler, can be challenging enough without adding horrible service to the mix. So knowing that Mama's was going to be incredibly crowded, I opted for Nick's Fish Market, hoping the view would make up for average food. I have to say I was extremely pleased with the experience. The food has indeed gotten much better. We had a perfect table overlooking the water. We started with a dozen raw oysters and they were just as good as the oysters I got from Mama's last Saturday. The service was outstanding. I had the crabcake, which I had had before. The last time I had it it was just fine. Nothing great, but not bad. This time it was very good -- much, much better. Two others had the crabcake and really liked it. One person had a fried oyster po'boy, which he liked very much. One tried salmon, which also was a hit. Toddler had the marghertia pizza, which he enjoyed last summer, and it was even better this time. Overall, a very good experience. I had written off Nick's until the weather improved and we could sit outside. But now I will definitely be back before then. Just wanted to pass this along!
