Neldam's Danish Bakery, Oakland

A couple weeks ago I was in charge of buying the birthday cake for my friend's party. I immediately called Neldam's to order one of my favorites for b-days, the Dream of Cream Cake (link below). It looks so rich but there's always room for this light chocolate chiffon cake after a big dinner. A whipped cream lover's delight - one of our guests who knows about such things estimated that nearly a pint of whipping cream was used. A 9" round is almost 10" tall and served up 10 big slices plus 2 extras for the honoree to take home. Even more amazing is that this cake is only $20. The instructions say it needs to be refrigerated within 45 minutes, so I put it on the floor under the passenger seat vent, turned up the A/C full blast for the hour ride to Forestville and it arrived plenty chilled.

I love Neldam's dinner rolls, especially the flat Swedish rolls and the flakey butter rolls made from croissant dough. These freeze well and I like to have some on hand. The muffins are also really good, made from scratch without the industrial chemical taste you find from other bakeries. Funny though, I've never had a Danish from here.

This place has been around since the 1929 and I was tickled to see that they now have a website.
