Naples - Grouper & Chips

L | Dec 18, 200108:32 PM

Sincerest thanks to fellow 'hound Annabelle for recommending Grouper & Chips in Naples. We were vacationing in Naples and dropped in for an early dinner. It was just great!

Gulf Coast Grouper & Chips sits in a small strip mall on 41, next to an ice cream place, Cuban restaurant, and hair salon. It is small, with about a dozen tables inside and three outside. We got there at about 6:30 on a Thursday night and nabbed the last outside table. The inside looks comfortable and inviting. Within minutes of our arrival, others pulled in and put their names in. The restaurant also seems to do a lively take-out business; several people picked up orders while we were there.

Seemed like the grouper basket was the thing to order for first-timers, so we went for it. They offer a 3-piece and 2-piece basket ($11.95 and $10.95), featuring batter-fried grouper, french fries, cole slaw, tartar sauce and lemon. Perfection. The grouper was fresh and tasted only of itself, not of the batter or oil. It was not mushy or greasy, and not overwhelmed by the batter, which was light and crunchy. Fries were super. All served steaming hot hot hot! Cole slaw was crunchy, cold and tangy.

Besides the grouper (which you can get batter-fried, on a sandwich, sauteed or blackened), you can enjoy fried shrimp, chicken strips, crabcakes, and linguini with grouper or shrimp. There are also daily specials, including bouillabaisse, sauteed snapper, and a fisherman's platter featuring fried grouper, shrimp, scallops, lobster tail, french fries, slaw and bread. This platter is the most expensive offering, at $18.95. Most entrees are under $12.

Beer and wine are available. Desserts include key lime pie and chocolate mousse; both sounded great, but we didn't have room! The portions here are generous. Service was fast and friendly.

Grouper & Chips is open 11:30-9:00pm, Monday thru Saturday. There is also a location in Bonita Springs. This is a great place to enjoy Gulf Coast grouper, and we loved it.
