We moved to Philly about 2 years ago, and have been distressed by the number of restaraunts which are all pomp and no circumstance. Coming from Chicago, where excellent, casual, and reasonably priced meals are almost a no-brainer, Philly has seemed like a swamp of mediocre food for insane prices. That is, until we went to the Mt Pleasant Cafe!
Mt Pleasant Cafe has a prix fixe menu for $32.95 (appetizer entree desert and beverages), and not only was the food excellent, the portions were astounding. Service was friendly, and the dinner rolls just kept coming. The appetizer with smoked salmon was a large plate piled with thick slices of salmon, salty makerel, and preserved scallops with toast and cucumber salad - so good. One entree was shockingly delicious goat meat (I can't believe we ordered "goat"!) with pumpkin gnocci that really tasted like pumpkin, and the best greens I have ever eaten - sweet, salty, lemony - amazing. The fish we ordered was also excellent (although the rice it came with was a bit gloppy), and the other appetizer was a hummos plate piled with portabello mushrooms, fresh mozarella, brie, and the only beets I have ever loved.
There weren't very many people there, which surprised me, so I think everyone should go to this BYO in Mt Airy. I swear I have no financial interest in the place, it just made me happy.
Lastly, how can I read this message board without having the huge file crash my computer? Perhaps there should be some subheadings/lists instead of one gihugic page...
