Mortar and Pestle for Pesto

"Pestle for Pesto"...say that three times fast.

I made pesto this weekend from the abundant basil leaves growing in my herb garden. I made it as I always do...using my food processor to grind up the basil, garlic and pinenuts. However, I just came across a Serious Eats article that describes how the food processor cannot come close to the quality of pesto you would get using a M&P. So of course now I want a large M&P.

I already have a tiny one I use for grinding small amounts of dry spices, but that's all it's good for. I would need something large enough to hold a lot of basil leaves. The SE article highly recommends a marble one for pesto specifically: "...the Thai granite mortar and pestle is my overall top pick: It works better as an alternative for making pesto than the Mediterranean one does as an alternative for making curry pastes. But, and this is a big but, if you know you won't make curry pastes with your mortar and pestle, the Mediterranean one is my top pick for you."

Well I can tell you for a fact I won't be making curry pastes...not my style of cooking. Aside from pesto, the only other thing I make regularly that could benefit from a large M&P would be guacamole, but I guess in that case I'd want a molcajete?

If I did go with marble, the "top pick" in the article is $300 all in...not the kind of money I want to spend on something that just makes pesto during "basil season."

So what all would you recommend?
