Two months ago a polite dinner party conversation about Morning Wood, the Hawaiian style breakfast spot in San Bruno inspired a visit to see if this diner could live up to the promise of its name. Though I'd been warned about the long line-ups on weekends, I figured that a weekday brunch would be an easier entry. Not if its Good Friday and Spring Break, I would discover. Arriving at 11:40 am, there were more than a dozen people ahead of me holding space in line. I was the last on the sign-up sheet before the staff cut-off who they were willing to accommodate before the 2:00 pm closing time. But as a solo diner I was seated after less than a 60-minute wait time, ahead of larger parties ahead of me.

The "Oh So Loco Moco", $16, made with a thick slab of beef meatloaf, perfectly cooked sunnyside up eggs, white rice, luscious gravy, scallions, red pickled ginger and a dash of furikake, was pretty awesome and enormous. It can also be made with kalua pork or mochiko chicken instead of the beef option. Though portions are huge, I noticed that parties were ordering more than one plate per person. The young couple next to me did an elaborate photo shoot posing with their five dishes. The duo on the other side ate part of four plates. Maybe the long wait for tables pushes customers to want to try everything in one visit. Everybody leaves with a box of leftovers.

While I liked the food just fine, the wait times and shortage of street parking nearby are barriers to a return visit. My waitress recommended avoiding the weekends as people are in line an hour before opening time. She said that Tuesday and Wednesday are the easiest days to get in.
