In years past, one of my favorite places to quench my chile relleno jones was Montezuma on Stroube St in El Rio (Oxnard), especially after the downfall of Celito Lindo. Since I was wrapping up a service call in the area at lunch time, I dropped in.
The absolutely splendid beefy sauce that once adorned the chiles rellenos was not in evidence.
The chile really was quite a bit too al dente, but it WAS a good chile.
The batter was of a decent thickness and consistency, but lacked character.
Approximately one third of the underside of the relleno was crisp, bordering on burned.
The taco was ground beef; IIRC, they once were shredded beef.
The coffee was good, and service at lunchtime was fairly prompt.
Sic transit gloria mundi.
