Last Minute Pies - Nation's Giant Hamburgers

Melanie Wong | Nov 24, 200410:29 PM     10

Yesterday as I was dashing around Oakland Chinatown completing my T-day shopping (crabs, roast pig, fresh rice noodles, etc.), I found out that someone had fallen down on the family pie procurement. A quick call to the ever resourceful Ruth Lafler for advice on somewhere nearby to buy "just plain pie" brought up the idea of Nation's in Jack London Square nearby. Boxes of pies were stacked high. I picked up an apple ($7.80) and a small sweet potato pie ($2.10). We had the sweet potato one last night and it's a nice one. The sweet potato filling isn't overly candied and the texture is rustic with some small bits of sweet potato and not overly emulsified. The short crust is good, albeit a bit soft on the bottom.

Nation's locations usually stay open late - don't know about tonight or tomorrow - so, it might be still be an option for picking up pies. Best to call first for hours and availability.
