Minimum Needed for a Chowhound Kitchen?

James G | Jul 28, 2002 09:37 PM

I am going to be living in Beijing for the remainder of the year, in a serviced apartment with a relatively nice (Chinese-style) kitchen. While on the one hand I see this an opportunity to acquire a new wok, cleaver, and some other Chinese-oriented cooking equipment, I also recognize that I probably won't want to eat Chinese-style every day. At the same time, I do not know how much time I will have to cook, so don't want to go overboard bringing stuff with me that I may not need. (I presume that the kitchen will come with basic pots and pans.) The question is: what sort of basic things do you think a person needs under these circumstances?

I know that this question cannot be answered fully without knowing what my tastes are: they are very broad, but I think that it is unlikely that I will be doing much entertaining or fancy preparations during this sojourn. Probably a lot of pastas, curries perhaps, and simple things.
