Mini-Review: Exquisite Fried Chicken at Chicken Day!

All my life I have been a fried chicken fanatic. Word has it that I went straight from the bottle to the drumstick. Of course, the best fried chicken I’ve ever had was my mom’s. Through the years I’ve enjoyed, among others: Albertson’s, Church’s, Donahoo’s, Flossie’s, Golden Bird, Hometown Buffet, Johnny Reb’s, Knott’s Berry Farm, Louisiana Fried Chicken, M & M’s, Maurice’s, Pann’s, Pioneer’s, Popeye’s, Ray’s, Roscoe’s, and yeah, even KFC’s. So, believe me, I know good fried chicken. Well, at least I know what I like - fresh, lightly battered, mildly seasoned, not-too-greasy, tender, juicy, light-golden brown and hot out of the fryer.

I recently happened upon a new place in town, “Chicken Day”, that offers exactly what I like. $12.95 for a dozen drumsticks or wings. Hounds, this stuff was absolutely wonderful. I was shocked not only by the quality of the chicken but also by the fact that Chicken Day is a small mom & pop shop run by a very nice Korean couple. Funny thing, they have a picture menu/brochure and the fried chicken you get looks exactly like its picture. Every piece was uniform in size, batter and light-golden brown color. No dark/burnt spots = clean oil. In a half dozen visits at different times of the day or night, the consistency is amazing. Quite possibly the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) folks!

Chicken Day also serves the traditional twice-fried Korean style (Kyochon, Bonchon) chicken with the spicy chili paste/sauce. I am not a fan of this style, nor do I particularly care for the pickled daikon and I don’t need steamed white rice with my fried chicken. I must admit though that, when available, their kimchi is very good. Some biscuits or rolls with honey and butter would be nice; however, I go there for their “regular” fried chicken. BTW, they have these great little take-out boxes with holes in them designed to ensure that your chicken does not get steamed soggy on the way to your destination.

For world-class fried chicken, Chicken Day will indeed make your day.
