I am back from my weekend in Columbia County. Thanks for all the suggestions (in the thread some ways down). We ate dinner at Mina, a Culinary Institute offshoot in Red Hook.
The dinner was fine, if not memorable. I had asparagus soup (warm) which was probably the highlight. Really excellent, simple and fresh. Ms. Z had cold sorrell soup. She thought it too chilled, but tasty.
Then I had ravioli with nettles and ricotta which was a little bland.
For entrees, Ms. Z had soft-shell crabs which she loved. I don't care for crabs so I can't say much about them. I had tuna, cooked almost as rare as I like it - not quite. It needed some salt and pepper as it, too, was a little bland.
Everything is beautiful and carefully prepared. Obviously presentation is important. I think they could be a little more aggressive in their seasoning. The staff seems to be Culinary Institute students, and they are a little self-conscious, as such students tend to be. Service is pleasant and attentive, but stiff.
They did allow us to drink our own wine (no corkage), which we appeciated.
Dessert for me was a wonderful crisp with pears and vanilla ice cream. Ms.Z had a somewaht less successful panicotta.
All in all, worthwhile if you are in the area. Thanks again for the tips, Lucia and others.
