Last year after judging barbecue in Harmony (outside Cambria) the 4th of July weekend, I continued south to Oxnard to complete the holiday get-away. Why Oxnard? Well, there are a couple restaurants that I'd long wanted to try in the area (and I did). Till then Ventura County had been kind of a flyover/driveby territory on my drive to and from LA and points further south. In figuring out where else I might want to eat, I uncovered at least TEN Mexican ice cream shops in Oxnard, a small city of 200K residents. Wish I had time to try them all, though I suspect that Michoacanita may be the one to beat.
Michoacanita is a newish Mexican ice cream and paleteria. It's a contemporary, modern take on the La Michoacana paleta shops started by folks from Tocumbo in Michoacan that have proliferated throughout Mexico and into California and other parts of the US.
I tasted the Tequila & Almond flavor and Nuez (pecan) ice cream, then decided I really wanted something lighter in an paleta de agua (dairy-free) format. This Mango-Fresa (mango-strawberry) paleta was terrific, dense with fruit pulp and barely sweetened to a barely a notch beyond the natural taste of ripe fruit. Pretty too, no?
Besides frozen treats, Michoacanita offers a variety of Mexican snacks. It also serves the bubble waffles popular at Hong Kong cafes!
