Mexico Tipico (Excelsior District, San Francisco)

Melanie Wong | Dec 21, 201403:14 AM     2

When I read "oniontears" post about the posole rojo at Mexico Tipico, I made a mental note to get my hands on some soupy things from here the very next weekend.

Since she covered posole so well, we branched out to try the menudo and birria de res para llevar. Both were very good with distinctive chile flavor and some chile paste/oil on the side if more heat's needed. The menudo portion came with a fall-apart pata. No honeycomb in the blend and the tripe was cooked just a little too soft for my druthers. I liked the richer and spicier birria de res even more. This rendition has a rich gravy rather than consome. The cubes of tender beef were velvety and not at all stringy.

A good find, many thanks. Definitely a cut above and not tipico of San Francisco's too often mediocre Mexican offerings.
