Finally! After literally living a stone's throw to Max in Sherman Oaks did we make it over for a very good dinner tonight. I was worried based on past reviews I'd read here that it would be too crowded and too noisy, but perhaps the fact that it was a Tuesday night made is perfectly quiet and only about half full.
I wanted to start with the SEARED FOIE GRAS NAPOLEON but they were out, so I had the AHI TOWERS (with wasabi tobiko, seaweed, ginger and cucumber salad) instead. It was very good although a bit too heavy on the wasabi for my tastes. My husband started with a special, Chestnut Soup that was outstanding.
My main was the short ribs, which many people had raved about here, and they were excellent. Fall off the bone tender and very flavorful. My husband had two starters as his main: the lumpia and a special duck confit, which I didn't like as much as the lumpia. For desert we split a great pear cheesecake served with pear sorbet.
There were a lot of things on the menu that looked intriguing, (CHOCOLATE BROWNIE AND BRIOCHE
BREAD PUDDING, INDIAN CORIANDER MASALA-CRUSTED COD, OXTAIL AND CRISPY MANDARIN SWEETBREADS) so we will be back. Our server Peter was excellent, very attentive and friendly. The place was only about half full, I can imagine it gets packed on Friday and Sat nights, so I think we will stick to weeknights.
With two soft drinks and a cappacino, the bill was about $70 not including tip.
