Maverick - Huh?

Was at Maverick (17th street between Mission and Valencia). It's in the old Limon location.

First off, the space is rather small dark and very loud. The walls are dark colors, the tables are dark, and there is nothing to dampen the noise (lots of hard surfaces). Needless to say its very hard to have a conversation.

As for the food, its was "eh". We had the crab "fluffs" and the Iowa salad. Both were fine. The fluffs consisted of three golf ball sized Maryland Blue Crab fritters. They consisted mostly of crab meat will little filler. It came with some tarter sauce and frisee. The Iowa salad was romaine hearts with pear, candied walnuts, blue cheese dressing. The salad was nice and properly dressed.

The entree was less successful. The pork tenderloin was properly cooked but came with boston baked beans/butternut squash mixture that was WAY too overpowering and sweet. The sweet saucy beans completely ruined the pork dish.

In addition we ordered a vegetable side dish that didn't come. When we asked about it we were told we didn't order it. When we insisted that we did, it finally arrived but was a very small portion for the price and a bit overcooked. Actually it is loud enough in the restaurant that I am sure that the waitstaff often does not hear all of the orders correctly.

Overall, I didn't find it worth going again. There was really nothing there that a competent cook could not do better in their own home.
