Maui trip report: June 2017

BenjaminSimon | Jun 15, 201709:51 AM     4

Just returned from a wonderful week in Maui, so wanted to report back, and thank the many previous reports for helping us along the way! Here's where we ate:

Geste Shrimp truck - Awesome first stop right off the plane. http://www.gesteshrimp.com/

Leoda's in Olowalu: Stopped for a snack and got the pineapple & macadmia nut pie, which was very tasty. Didn't get back there, but seemed like a good option. http://www.leodas.com/

The Fish Market Maui near Kahana -- Had an amazing seared ahi sandwich on the first day. Returned later in the week for a fish burrito and fish & pork tacos. The burrito was excellent, fish taco only so-so in comparison to some of the others we had, and pork taco great. https://fishmarketmaui.com/

Miso Phat in Kahana - Highly recommended; delicious, fun, and byo! Go early, put your name on the list, and then go next door to grab drinks which you can sip while you wait. http://misophat.com/

Honolua Store in Kapalua - We went here for breakfast a few times -- they have pastries from sweet aloha, and make a mean breakfast sandwich. http://honoluastore.com/

Leilani's in Ka'anapali-- Good option if you're in Whaler's VIllage/on Ka'anapali beach, though I wouldn't say it's worth a drive. Pretty good fish tacos and fried chicken sandwich. Surprisingly good given overall vibe. http://www.leilanis.com/

Julia's -- delicious juice stand if you do the drive around the North side of the island (from the blowhole to Wailuku).

Umi Maui sushi in Wailuku -- Some of the best sushi/sashimi I've ever had. It's also BYOB, though without a liquor store right nearby, so I'd plan ahead on that front. Highly recommended.

Gazebo in Napili -- We came super early so wouldn't have too long of a line. The pancakes were indeed very good, and the omelette also tasty, though not sure it's worth the hype/a long wait.

South Maui Fish Co truck in Kihei - Awesome poke (spicy) and great fish tacos; latter very different from usual. https://www.facebook.com/South-Maui-F...

Coconuts fish cafe in Kihei - tasty fish tacos, possibly our favorite of the trip, actually. http://www.coconutsfishcafe.com/home

Maui Chefs table -- We did this as one of two big splurges on the trip (Merriman's was the other). The dishes ranged from good to excellent, roughly corresponding, in reverse order, to the courses themselves (better and more imaginative at the start). Our favorite dishes were the spicy kampachi crudo & the salad. Later courses got a bit on the too heavy/less fun side. But a really fun experience -- If you have one stretch meal in Maui, I'd say for Merriman's, but certainly no regrets about going here. It was similar in vibe to Lazy Bear in SF, if you've been to/heard of that (though not as good). http://mauitropicalplantation.com/che...

Paia fish market south side (Kihei) - ok, but wouldn't come back. We got an Ono burger and fish tacos. Fine flavors, but better elsewhere. https://paiafishmarket.com/

Sip me in Makawao - Hipster coffee shop; got tasty pineapple cake but theyy had what looked like an interesting cold brew + coconut jarred drink in the cooler that we bought and turned out to be quite disgusting. Probably the taste lowlight of the trip.

Star noodles in Lahaina - So, so good. Got the brussels sprouts, poke, sisig, pork bun, pohole salad, hot & sour soup, looke moore fun, malasadas, sake, & cocktails. We sat at the bar, and the bartender definitely made the experience even better and steered us in good directions. http://www.starnoodle.com/

Hawaiian village coffee in Kahan - Got a rosemary bialy with lox. Pretty tasty, even if not really a bialy.

Ohana Tacos near Kahana -- Just stopped in for one fish taco. It was a different style from most others, but very tasty. https://www.facebook.com/OhanaTacos/

Sea House in Napili - got some happy hr snacks which were unimpressive (coconut shrimp, poke nachos, maui beach balls, kapalua roll). Fine cocktails, though. https://www.seahousemaui.com/

Sansei in Kapaulua - This was pretty disappointing, though largely because it came *after* Umi Maui & Miso Phat. It would be great most other places, but pretty forgettable for Maui. https://sanseihawaii.com/kapalua/

Tin Roof in Kahului - awesome. Got the pork belly bowl and the local plate (it was a holiday); both excellent. Grabbed chicken sandwiches on the way to the airport on our final day, as well - also delicious. http://www.tinroofmaui.com/

Hana farm store - good banana bread when everything else was closed.

Hana Ranch Restaurant - one of only a couple places in Hana actually open for dinner. This was fine; had the fish Caesar, a fish taco, and fish & chips. All fine, nothing bad, nothing great.

Ulupalakua Ranch & Grill - stopped for an Elk Burger on the back road from Hana. Pretty good!

Jake's Kitchen in Whaler's VIllage - 3 fish tacos for $11; not bad for a mall in Maui. This place would kill in SF.

Merriman's in Kapalua - really wonderful. Best meal of the trip; interesting food and cocktails, all very well prepared. Amazing views. Would sooner come back here than Chef's Table, even aside from cost. One thing we did to get a great table/view: we made an early res (5:45) since nothing was available between then and 8, but when we arrived they let us go to the lounge and have drinks until one of the tables right by the window opened up about an hour later. So as long as you're down for some delicious cocktails, this was a great way to slightly hack the process. We had the ono & jalapeno cakes, kauai shrimp, kale salad, tomato salad, mahi mahi, and fish of the day (opakapaki, in this case). https://www.merrimanshawaii.com/
