since i was in the area and lost my voice after teaching and then interviewing a horde of teachers this afternoon i stopped in the newish outpost of SIBERIA on w40th street for a few well deserved restorative brews. my good call it was cool.
afterward i walked downed 9th avenue, balked at the high prices at SUPREME MACARONI CO. and headed over to MARKET CAFE (bet./around 38-37th streets). what a great one this is--nice staff and gentle prices!
i had a very tasty steak frites which turned out to be a fine hangar steak, excellent frites and pesto butter ($12). it was made rare as requested, served very quickly and so i was very happy. other dinner menu items like chicken and pastas looked decent if not exciting. a cod cake app looked real good as i saw it one someone's plate, but i did not try it and i think you should ($6).
bargain wine lovers and novices rejoice because all wines by the glass are $5 and no bottle is even $20. i had a glass of tempranillo, santa julio, '00, chile which was a hardy red and a great choice for my meal.
generally i dont like this approach to the wine listings, but here i found it helpful so i liked how it was organized:
full flavored, bold reds
(i.e., my choice and merlot, veramonte, '00, chile btg)
rustic, aromatic, spicy reds
versatile, fruity reds
semi-dry, fruity whites
earthy, full flavor whites
crisp, lively whites
total bill was $18.40+ $5 tip. i say go, go, go!!
