Mario Batali’s Sugar and Wine Syrup

On the Leonard Lopate Show Chef Batali recounted a recipe for a wine syrup.

Simmer down to a syrup four cups of red wine with two cups of sugar.

Just What is this called and does anyone have a use for this?

I have used this in place of wine in my pot roast with great results.
